I will be running the Photography Program on Aurora Expeditions’ new ship, the Greg Mortimer, on the Arctic Discovery voyage in 2020. The 21 day/20-night adventure will take us from Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen Island, in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, along the northwest coast of Spitsbergen Island, across the Greenland Sea to the remote bays of Northeast Greenland National Park, where we’ll aim to make several landings a day at places such as Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord, Kap Humboldt and King Oscar Fjord. We’ll then head down to the very beautiful Scoresbysund, the world’s largest fjord, before sailing over to the rarely visited volcanic island of Jan Mayen. The final days of the cruise will be spent photographing the dramatic scenery of the Lofoten archipelago, before disembarking at Bergen in Norway.
The photography on this trip will be spectacular, featuring landscapes (and seascapes) of magnificent icebergs and calving glaciers, sheltered fjords and a huge volcano; lots of Arctic birds and wildlife including polar bears, walrus, seals and reindeer, and we’ll get to experience arctic culture at the colourful Inuit community of Ittoqqortoormiit (we might even learn how to pronounce the name of the village!). The voyage departs from Longyearbyen on August 31 and finishes at Bergen on September 20, 2020.
