The Sydney Mardi Gras took place the day after I got home from a month in South America. It struck me as a cross between the carnaval parade in Montevideo and one of the street parties in Rio. Like those events it was colourful, crazy and joyful and just shows you don’t always have to go far from home to shoot great festivals.
Carnaval in Rio was awesome. To see a whole city partying day and night for five days straight was quite something. Shooting a variety of images of the Samba School Parade from the grandstand was challenging but nicely countered by the ease of access to the street parties, as long as you don’t mind being in the middle of a massive, surging crowd. Strut the Streets is one of AIME’s (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) annual fundraising events. Participants walk the streets of Sydney’s CBD in swimwear to raise money to help Indigenous kids finish school at the same rate as every Australian child. It’s good fun for a great cause.
